WINE

n 1974, The Rainier Club's wine list was printed on a single page.  The sections included eleven red wines, eleven white wines, five rosé wines and four sparkling wines, together with five sherries, two ports, and a Dubonnet.  In the decade of the "martini" lunch, wine it seemed, was nary an afterthought in the immediate environs of "fine dining."  Ironically, the founding fathers of The Rainier Club were quite savvy in their quest to distinguish themselves as a destination for food, conviviality, and drink.  A recently discovered copy of our stewards list from 1904 reflects a host of classic wines from France featuring Premier Grand Cru's: Ch. Marguax, Lafite-Rothschild, and Mumm's Champagne.  In this same spirit, then president, Harry Prior, commissioned 15 members to serve on the Club's inaugural Wine Committee.  Their mission was to "improve the wine selections that are worthy of the Club's image..."  With this charter, The Rainier Club Wine Committee has since evolved into a fun, social, and education-oriented group of members who help continue our legacy of superb wine.
